John A. Toolan Jr.

John A. Toolan Jr.Brigadier General (Select) Toolan has served the Marine Corps for 28 years. He is currently Director of the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College. Informed by the study of history, language and culture, the Command and Staff College educates and trains its joint, multinational, and interagency professionals in order to produce skilled warfighting leaders able to overcome diverse 21st Century security challenges. Prior to reporting to Marine Corps University in October 2004, he commanded Regimental Combat Team 1. Previous billets were located in the Europe and the US. General Toolan served in combat during "DESERT STORM" with

 

2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion; and during "IRAQI FREEDOM" as the AC/S G-3 1st Marine Division, and the Commanding Officer of Regimental Combat Team 1. At SHAPE he served as the Operation Planning team leader for "ALLIED FORCE" in Kosovo, and senior planner for stabilization operations in Bosnia. General Toolan is a proud native of Brooklyn, New York and a graduate of Xavier High School and Fordham University. He received his Masters degree in Business Administration from National University. His military schools include: the Air War College, Maxwell AFB (1998); Naval War College (NR, 1995); Marine Corps Command and Staff College (NR, 1988); and Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School (NR, 1984). His personal awards and decorations include: Combat Action Ribbon, Legion of Merit (2) w/V, Meritorious Service Medal (2), and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2).
